(1) Charges
There is no charge for using the collections and making general
enquiries at the InfoCentre.
Charges for photocopying is HK$1 per page (A4 size).
Charges for making computer printout is HK$3 per page (A4 size).
Fax service is offered free of charge, but is limited to local dialing
only.
(2) Search strategy
All collections in the InfoCentre are classified based on the Dewey
Decimal Classification Scheme. Each item is assigned a call number
and subject heading(s), based on the Library of Congress Subject
Headings. Thus, there are four ways to retrieve items relevant to
your interest:
Title Search
A Title Search will search the titles of publications. Type as
many words as you can in the EXACT ORDER as they appear in the
TITLE of the publication you would like to find. For English language
publications, omit initial articles, "a", "an"
or "the" and punctuation. If you are unsure of the EXACT
TITLE or your search retrieves no record or the wrong record,
go back to the search menu and try the Keywords Search.
Subject Search
A Subject Search will retrieve materials about a specific topic.
The subject headings used are chosen from a controlled vocabulary,
based on the Library of Congress Subject Headings.
Due to general unfamiliarity of the Library of Congress Subject
Headings, readers are recommended to first make a search using
Keywords Search, then check out what subject heading(s) are being
used for the search topic by viewing relevant record(s) retrieved.
Call Number Search
A Call Number Search will help you to locate a specific item.
It can also help to retrieve materials of similar categories.
Type as much of the call number as you know. If you are not sure
of the complete call number or your search does not retrieve the
record(s) you want, try again typing only the beginning portion
of the call number.
Again, since you may not be familiar with the Dewey Decimal Classification
Scheme, it would be wise for you to first make a search using
Keywords Search, then check out what call number is being used
to represent your search topic by viewing relevant record(s) retrieved.
Keywords Search
Keywords Search allows searches in the publication title and subject
area when you do not know the complete or exact title or what
subject heading(s) are being used. The words you type may come
from the author, title, subject, content notes, organization name
or conference name. Multiple words are searched as a phrase.
If your search results in too many records, you may want to:
i. Think of some synonyms or alternative concepts of your search
topic;
ii. Use word(s) of more specific or narrower concept;
iii. Limit your result by selecting an appropriate collection
(e.g. Trade Directories, Multimedia Collection, etc);
iv. Combine search words using AND or AND NOT to make your search
more focused.
If your search results in too few records or zero record, you
may want to:
i. Think of some synonyms or alternative concepts of your search
topic;
ii. Use word(s) of broader concept;
iii. Broaden your search area by using the word OR;
iv. Check for typing errors or misspelling.
(3) Status and Holdings
- Location, Status & Library Has
When a record is retrieved, a status box would appear, such as this
one:
| LOCATION |
CALL NUMBER |
STATUS |
| SME Collection |
SME 658.8 PMM 2003 |
AVAILABLE |
LOCATION represents which collection this item belongs to in the
InfoCentre. For the location of each collection, please refer to
the Floor Plan.
STATUS tells whether the item is available to readers or not. If
it says "AVAILABLE", it means that the item is on the
shelf and is ready for readers' use.
Also, records of journals and periodicals usually have "Holdings"
and "Library Has" information. They tell the readers how
many and what issues of a periodical are in the InfoCentre.
(4) Telephone enquiry
and reservation
Users can call the InfoCentre for simple enquiry, e.g. the date
of an exhibition to be held this year in Hong Kong. Users can also
call to check the availability of an item and reserve it before
coming to the InfoCentre. Our telephone number is (852) 2248-4000.
(5) Laptop plug-in
station and word processing workstations
The InfoCentre has workstations with electricity socket for visitor's
own laptop or notebook computer. It is on a first come, first served
basis.
The InfoCentre has word processing workstations, each equipped
with a laser printer. Since the word processing workstations are
very popular in the InfoCentre, it is on a first come, first served
basis.
(6) Access to InfoCentre
